The other day she had some toys for disney princesses or similar and didn't have a particular one, so I looked and of course they are hard to find without buying another full set. What to do? 3D print and paint of course! Cheaper than buying another pack to get a specific small figure for a toddler. 4 hour print job later I had 4 new figures from Thingiverse that I think she will like. The first is Mater from Cars. There is a 9 minute Cars clip on Disney+ where Mater races Tokyo Drift style and my daughter loves. While the STL is normal Mater, I can at least do the Tokyo Drift color scheme - she won't care. ## Final Photos [[f9eef3ffc00e6868a29f0770329d2114_MD5.jpg|Open: 20240718_072222.jpg]] > [!model-gallery] > ![[f9eef3ffc00e6868a29f0770329d2114_MD5.jpg]] > > [[9f9d6b6b14ed7e90706e3ce9e6882bf8_MD5.jpg|Open: 20240718_072203.jpg]] > ![[9f9d6b6b14ed7e90706e3ce9e6882bf8_MD5.jpg]] ## Lessons Learned - **Airbrushing Barbados Rex needs thinner:** A while back I actually bought some Barbados Rex paints for Gunpla although I still haven't gotten to using it really. It appears fairly thin out of the bottle as an enamel, but it's not thin enough. It needs about a 1:1 ratio of thinner to paint, but after that it sprays very easily. I used the barbados thinner. #lesson/painting - **Confirmed you can paint start to finish in one evening with hair dryer:** I saw Sideshow collectables once using a hair dryer in their painting process, and I've used it before to dry paint on certain small parts here and there. However, I don't believe I've ever painted (including priming) a figure from start to finish in a single sitting. I did on this one, particularly because I'm not interested in spending hours per figure for a toddler. After each stage just hit it with the hair dryer (I used low warm) for about 60 seconds and it's dry to touch. This let me prime, base coat blue, then add some detail paints (including layering white over base coat, etc.) in one short session. #lesson/priming ## Related Notes - [[Model Metadata and Tags]]
